Dental BioAerosols Challenge in Dental Practice
Dentistry is generally classified in the very high-risk category of occupations involved with aerosol production. This is not helped by coronavirus particles ranging from 60 to 140 nanometres (0.06 to 0.14 micrometres), with an average of 0.125 micron, which makes them a significant aerosol threat. The majority of everyday dental procedures that use low- or high-speed handpieces, electrosurgery units, ultrasonic scalers, air polishers, prophy angles, hand instruments, air/water syringes or lasers can create bioaerosols, with everyday routine equipment like ultrasonic scalers and high-speed handpieces producing more airborne contamination than any other devices. As we have seen, the significant aerosol risk attributed to the majority of routine dental treatments has led to the suspension of general dentistry and to emergency treatment being undertaken in dedicated urgent care centers using ‘full’ personal protective equipment (PPE) as outlined in official guidance.

As we look towards an initial broader resumption of treatments, the profession will be looking to the industry to help solve issues, particularly aerosol creation and mitigation, and that is where members can be in a position to possibly supply equipment to help address the massive ‘aerosol challenge’.

Ventilation & AC System

1. IQAir – IQAir individually tests each HealthPro Series air purifier at the factory to verify that your HyperHEPA filtration is meeting our exacting standards in reality, not just theory. We test total system efficiency – the actual air coming out of the outlet. If the system is not delivering 99.97% cleaner air or better, we don’t ship it. The results of the tests are detailed in a hand-signed Certificate of Performance, which is shipped with every HealthPro air purifier.
   • HyperHEPA particle filtration: GC MultiGas air purifier features a powerful HyperHEPA pre-filter that removes particles of all sizes, including ultrafine particles, viruses, and bacteria.
   • Cartridge-based activated carbon adsorption: Highest-grade activated carbon removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) responsible for odours.
   • Cartridge-based chemisorption: Destroys harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde, by an oxidation process inside a chemically active alumina pellet.
   • Post-filter sleeve: Wraps each gas cartridge to further filter the air and prevent release of media dust.

• Ozone Water and Ozone Gas – Ozone is a great adjunct to several treatments. It is highly powerful in killing germs. It can be delivered in trays or as a gas to treat tooth decay, prevent periodontal infection, in root canal treatment, head/neck/sinus stuffiness or infection, and more. The use of medical ozone is popular world-wide and has many applications for treatment.
• Digital X-Rays – Digital x-rays use a sensor in place of film. That sensor is connected to a computer, making the image immediately visible on the screen. Because the sensor is so sensitive, a minimal amount of radiation is needed to see the picture, meaning less radiation exposure to you. Also, no dangerous chemicals are needed to develop digital x-rays, making them more biologically and environmentally friendly. X-ray and examination – Routine X-rays can be extremely revealing when it comes to periodontal disease. X-rays show the extent of bone disease (cavitation) and gum recession, and also aid the dentist in identifying areas which may need future attention.
• Intra-Oral Cameras – Intra-oral cameras are a tool we use to record videos and take still snapshots of your mouth. This provides us with a way to visually communicate your oral condition to you. We know it is much easier to understand what is happening with your health if you can see the problem for yourself, firsthand.
• High Vacuum Aerosol Catcher – Prevent airborne contamination. Eliminates dust, saliva, blood, etc., generated during scaling or prep may be sprayed indoors in the form of aerosols, causing infections in hospital staff and patients.
• CAMI Hispovac 350 it – NEW HOSPIVAC 350 has been designed for professional aspiration of bodily fluids, gases, tissues or bones of the patient during or after surgery. The state-of-the-art oiless pump guarantees high performances with excellent suction capacities and maxium vacuum reachable within a few seconds, with high quality filters and backflow-prevention system substantially prevents contaminant backflow into a patient’s mouth. This system includes a saliva ejector tube for insertion into the patient’s mouth and for removal of saliva, blood, etc. when a vacuum is applied. A backflow-prevention device receives fluid from the saliva ejector tube and includes an internal valve seat. A clear dashboard along with a full range of accessories makes it the ideal device for surgeries and technique sensitive treatments.
